A flamboyant face lift for a Tribeca building; Plans unveiled for Clinton block development

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has unanimously approved a radical renovation of a three-story single-family home at 187 Franklin Street in Tribeca. The Jeremy Edmiston design calls for transforming the building’s diminutive facade into a miniature version of Frank O. Gehry’s residential skyscraper at 8 Spruce Street known now as “New York by Gehry.” Commissioners described the design, which involves a wavy red-brick facade that was described as looking like “flames on the side of a hot rod,” as “phenomenal,” “symphonic,” “exciting,” “smart” and “delirious.”

The Gotham Organization announced plans for development of the block between 44th and 45th street and Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. Known as Gotham West and designed by SLCE Architects, the development will contain 1,240 rental apartments in four buildings, a 31-story apartment tower on Eleventh Avenue and a mid-rise building and two 14-story buildings—built on a platform over Amtrak train tracks—with affordable housing available to low, moderate and middle-income families. There will also be a 200-car garage and about 17,000 square feet of retail space. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year.
