Home prices on the rise in Brooklyn and Queens; tenants want illegal penthouse torn down; new benches to get the city sitting

Though reports indicate that Manhattan’s luxury apartment market has remained stable, the best news may be in Brooklyn and Queens. According to the New York Daily News, home prices in those two boroughs rose slightly over the summer, with the median price increasing 5% to $510,000 in Brooklyn in Q3 and the actual number of sales up $18.1%. In Queens, the median sales price was up 8.5% compared with a year ago (New York Daily News).

A two-floor penthouse that was added as the sixth and seventh floors of 515 East Fifth Street in the East Village and declared illegal by the city in 2007 hasn’t escaped the efforts of building tenants and local elected officials. The extra floors allegedly pose fire safety risks and have damaged existing apartments, among other complaints. The tenants and politicians are pressing the city to act on the Board of Standards and Appeals ruling and dismantle the illegal structures (DNAinfo.com).

New Yorkers will soon have some new spots to rest their weary feet or, as New Yorkers are more likely to do, get some work done: The mayor’s office has announced plans to put 1,000 new benches, designed by a local industrial designer, in rest-ready spots—between trees and near bus stops, for example—across all five boroughs. Dubbed CityBench, the program was intended to make the city more comfortable for the elderly and to encourage people to use public transportation—or walk—rather than drive to their offices each day (NYObserver).
