An agenda for making city streets more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly; Cool technology gives residents more control at a new condo

The Upper West Side Streets Renaissance Campaign is offering a plan to radically change the streetscapes of the Upper West Side. The proposal calls for reducing auto lanes, creating bicycle lanes, and expanding sidewalks. The campaign is aimed at preserving the pedestrian-friendly character of city neighborhoods that distinguishes New York from other American cities.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has selected Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (Headed by Richard Rogers of Centre Pompidou fame) as the architects for an office tower above the north wing of the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue.

Marketing has started for Tempo at 300 East 23rd Street at Second Avenue. In addition to a dazzling selection of amenities and features–including Up Tempo, a 2,600-square-foot entertainment sky lounge with an outdoor kitchen, putting green and grass beds–the new condo is a veritable hive of technology. All units come with Unitone, an intra-building security and communications system with a color monitor and emergency alarms, and Vertilinc, an electronic portal that gives residents access to ceiling and wall speakers, city guides, and wireless control of all electronics.
