New Developments in the News

MARCH 30, 2009

New residences are on the market in Hell's Kitchen and Soho, new plans are revealed for a downtown sliver and Bellvue's future may take a new turn

Marketing has begun at 511 Ninth Avenue. Known as Galerie 515 Hotel & Condominium Residences, the new project hopes to draw tenants to the "dramatically changing Hell's Kitchen district" with convenience and the cachet of a new boutique hotel as well as luxury condos and the prerequisite rooftop skylounge.

The architectural firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro has revealed designs that feature sliding glass-block facade screens for a new building on the south side of East Houston Street. The new 7-story structure would fill a long-vacant 20-foot-wide sliver between two existing tenement buildings.

The infamous Bellevue Hospital Psychiatric Center on the east side of First Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets may undergo yet another change: Plans for its conversion to a hotel have been in discussion since last year. The massive Georgian-style building has served as a homeless shelter since 1984, and there is concern that its conversion will impact the city's shelter system if its doors are no longer open to homeless people.
