New Developments in the News

JUNE 8, 2009

Community boards block the Nouvel MoMA tower and green-light an FIT addition; marketing starts at a new West Side Condo.

Manhattan's Community Board 5 nixed approval on development permits for the proposed Jean Nouvel mega-tower next to MoMA , citing concerns about the possibility of increased museum attendance due to the additional gallery space the tower would provide. The board's vote is the latest news in the much-debated project since an air rights transfer from St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the University Club was approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The Land Use & Zoning Committee of Community Board 5 has approved a plan submitted by the Fashion Institute of Technology for an addition to a mid-block building on its 28th Street Chelsea campus. The proposed 9-story addition would be designed by ShoP Architects, the firm known for The Porter House and 290 Mulberry Street, and would feature a full-height atrium, an innovative system of solar collectors and an intriguing façade of angled openings on a fifth-floor "campus center."
