Another condo for Little Italy; plans for Hotel Bellevue put on hold.

The 6-story commercial address at 372 Broome Street will offer 14 new condominium residences when conversion of the red brick building at Broome and Mott Streets is complete. The residence-to-be has had minor cosmetic updates—new brownstone arches frame its Mott-side doorways and the black cast-iron storefront on Broome has been impressively restored. The building’s transformation from commercial to residential space is in keeping with the recent trend in the Little Italy neighborhood—many nearby buildings have undergone similar conversions.

Hotel plans for the Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital building have been put on hold. The infamous hospital, which until it closed in the mid-1980s functioned as the threatening madhouse of story and cinema and temporary home to its fair share of tormented members of the city’s literary and cultural milieu, has been in use as a homeless men’s shelter. In 2008 the city issued a request for proposals to redevelop it as a hotel and conference center to serve the nearby medical community, but plans have been shelved due, in part, to current economic conditions and a rise in demand for shelter space.
