Nicely Putt: Mini Golf Courses Spring Up in Small Spaces

AUGUST 14, 2009

Space-saving creativity puts a round or two of mini-golf on your list of things to do in the city.

It started with the Putting Lot. This lo-fi miniature golf course set up by artists in an empty lot in Bushwick was exactly the right idea to coax a just-old-enough-to-be-nostalgic population to step away from the YouTube and have some good clean fun. The nine-hole course in an abandoned lot upped the cool factor by making each hole's décor a commissioned work—a contest was held and the winning pieces were chosen for this honor—by a different artist or architect. There's even a Golf Film Series to entertain putters after the sun goes down with free screenings of films like Caddyshack throughout August.

The putt-putt meme has spread to more established environs since the Lot opened in June: Another mini-golf course will be popping up in September in Columbus Park in downtown Brooklyn. The course will have a Brooklyn theme, say organizers from the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, and the idea is to bring people to the under-used park, which clears out once the office crowd vaporizes in the evening hours.

Putting Lot is not alone in the artist-inspired mini-golf genre: Governors Island’s “City of Dreams” artist-designed mini-course also commissioned artists for its 18-hole course.
