NYC Neighborhoods: Lower Bowery

APRIL 23, 2012

With new boutique condos and downtown cool, a revitalized Lower Bowery isn’t bumming anyone out.

Lower Bowery--the stretch of Bowery below Houston Street to Canal Street--is becoming a downtown destination and a residential hotspot. The New Museum at 231 Bowery helped put the area on the cultural map and the Whole Foods Market on Houston Street added an amenities boost, plus the area has a wealth of new restaurants and great shopping in nearby NoLita and SoHo.

The Lower Bowery has been compared to the Meatpacking District of a decade ago—also boasts plenty of boutique condominium buildings, including:
-Nolita Place at 199 Bowery—built in 2002, a 12-story building that helped to transform the Bowery from low-rise shabbiness to towered chic;
-195 Bowery, the thoroughly modern, 18-story mini-tower and prominent landmark, built in 2004;
-One Kenmare Square at 210 Lafayette Street, developed in 2005 just a few blocks west of the traditional district boundary, with 11 stories and an interesting, undulating facade.
