NYC Neighborhoods: Upper West Chelsea

APRIL 2, 2012

Architecture, art and a cool urban park have made this West Side neighborhood a new favorite.NYC condos in Chelsea HL23

Upper West Chelsea is Manhattan’s newest rising star. Referred to in a 2011 New York Magazine article about burgeoning microneighborhoods as “The Higher Line,” this neighborhood runs west to the Hudson from 10th Avenue and from 23rd Street to 30th Street

The centerpiece of the area is that urban wonder, the High Line park, which now stretches from Gansevoort Street to 30th Street and was built on an abandoned, elevated train line. The High Line may be the biggest reason so many have discovered the urge to converge on Upper West Chelsea, but it’s hardly the only one. Streets are lined with art galleries both old and new, chic boutiques, restaurants, and live theater.

West Chelsea may be a nice place to visit, but there are just as many reasons to live here. New condo developments like HL23 at 515-517 West 23rd Street (shown), +Art at 540 West 28th Street and Highline 519 at 519 West 23rd Street have made headlines and won awards for their stunning architecture and top-notch amenities. The Hudson River Greenway and Chelsea Park are nearby, as is the Chelsea Piers sports complex. Penn Station and Midtown are also close, and there'll be a new subway stop for the number 7 subway line at 11th Avenue and 34th Street in 2013. Plus there’s more of the High Line in the works: The third phase will connect West Chelsea with Hell’s Kitchen/Clinton.
