Porchetta: Slow Cooked Fast Food (and a Cupcake or Two)

JANUARY 23, 2009

A new savory lunch spot and covetable cupcakes make 7th street a destination for your cravings

Porchetta—the Italian fast-food favorite—roast pork in a crust of fennel, thyme, sage, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper, is the mainstay at this closet-sized sandwich shop on East 7th Street, but the savory specialty is tasty enough to warrant all the raves it's been getting of late. In addition, roasted root veggies and a stellar sandwich or two (a fresh-mozzarella sandwich with herbs is perfect) on heavenly Sullivan Street Bakery rolls make it well worth it for anyone craving a reasonably-priced mouth-watering lunch to shoulder their way into the tiny, rustic storefront.

When you're ready for dessert, just cross the street for a mouth-watering mini-cupcake at Butter Lane. Yet another new addition to an already-celebrated food neighborhood, the small shop gives the often-overrated confection the attention it deserves, with a selection of homemade frostings (there's a sampling bar at the counter) and unusually mouth-melting cupcakes without all the fancy footwork.
