Real Estate for Beginners: Ask the Questions, Get the Facts

JULY 7, 2009

Real estate brings out the expert in everyone, but you need the real pros to give you the facts.

In New York City, Real Estate passes for a local spectator sport that can get downright cutthroat at times, with an army of bloggers, pundits and armchair enthusiasts offering their opinions. But when the time comes to buy or sell, you need to know the realities. Finding a good resource is important.

CityRealty’s Buyer's Guide
is a good place to start. Insider publication Inman News has an impressive database of Real Estate FAQs. Local publications offer insider answers, Q & A and advice as well: The New York Times Real Estate blogs address reader questions on relevant topics from fees to mortgages and more. Personal finance-oriented publications like CNNMoney are a good choice for interactive tools like calculators and quizzes, and some, like iVillage and More magazine are geared toward the specific issues that women may face when buying or selling. Legal info center NOLO is a good resource for facts on the legal end. If you'd rather start with the bookshelf, there are, of course, a huge variety of books for beginners, including the popular For Dummies series. Some caveats: check that articles and books are up-to-date, as advice changes with the market.
