Ride 'Em Cowboy¿¿¿Urban Rodeos

MAY 19, 2009

You don't have to head west to watch the rodeo pros–and plenty of amateurs–riding the bull.

New York City might be the last spot in the lower 48 where you'd expect to watch real life cowboys do their stuff, but in recent years, Madison Square Garden arena has been home to the celebrated Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event known as the Built Ford Tough Invitational.

If you've witnessed the real thing and you want to try your hand at bull riding, Johnny Utah's on West 51st Street has the beef. Once you've mastered staying put, there's a Monday night competition. There's even a singles event called "singles bull riding and beers," which might really lead to a date to remember.

The newest addition to the mechanical bull rodeo circuit is Mason-Dixon in the unlikely Lower East Side–where you're more likely to find co-eds than cowboys. The bar is located on Essex Street just north of Rivington if your Urban Cowboy/girl side ever gets a hankerin (ladies ride the bull free on Sundays). Finally, there's no bull (pun intended), but Rodeo Bar calls itself NYC's Longest Running Honky Tonk and offers Tex-Mex cuisine, live music and more in the rodeo spirit.
