Sara Jenkins' Porsena: From Sublime Sandwiches to Perfect Pasta

FEBRUARY 4, 2011

A celebrated (Porchetta) sandwich chef focuses on her pasta skills at a new East Village dinner spot.

Foodies, locals and non-vegetarians in general have been keeping Sara Jenkins’ perfectly done roast-pork sandwiches from tiny, tiled sandwich shop Porchetta on East 7th Street at the top of their treat lists, and she’s expressed her desire to expand for quite some time.

The result of that desire has finally arrived, just down the street from the aforementioned neighborhood meatery. Porsena (21 East 7th Street; (212) 228-4923)), which opened in December of last year features crowd-pleasers like perfect pastas (the lasagna is highly recommended), a winter dream of a pork ragout, and a full range of appetizers like fresh mozzarella crostini and has already become neighborhood favorite in a neighborhood where it’s hard to pick just one. Date-perfect and grown-up—though thoroughly intimate and casual—Porsena accepts reservations and, unlike some other neighborhood purveyors of Italian comfort food—is quiet enough for conversation.
