Sew What: A Crafty New Shop Gets Materialistic

APRIL 1, 2011

A new UES sewing store and studio helps you DIY your way to some new–or just improved–threads.

Ever wish you could be one of those industrious types who sew their own clothes? Love the idea of fashion design but can’t sew a button? Find the creativity and courage to give it a try with a little help (or a lot) from someone who knows her way around a bobbin at recently-launched Upper East Side sewing, fabric crafts and needlework store and studio Pins and Needles.

The store offers an internationally-sourced and carefully-curated selection of fabrics and sewing and needlecraft supplies, but they’ll go further than just selling you the raw material. Handmade may be all the rage, but our hands don’t always do what we want, and store owner Rachel Low and her crafty crew offer a menu of classes—both private and groups—covering everything from Sewing 101 to Sweater 911 (renovation for sweaters that have seen better days), or any topic, pattern or project you choose. There are classes for adults, teens, and kids over eight, and the shop will host birthday parties and other events so you can keep the whole gang in stitches.
