Small Talk of the Town: Describe Your 'Hood in Six Words

FEBRUARY 27, 2009

A city blog lets people briefly bash or big-up their borough.

Most people wouldn't be too hard-pressed to find a few choice words for their neighborhood, and in this era of abbreviation, sometimes less is more when you want to get right to the essence of things. About-town blog Flavorwire has posted a bite-sized exercise in five-borough shout-outs (the idea came from the blog's annoyance at a misguided write-up in the Brooklyn Examiner; its author has apparently promised to go back and take a better look at her subject matter before discussing it in print.). The assignment: Describe your neighborhood in six words in the comments. What better way to make a Friday afternoon go by a little faster?

A few examples:
"Red Hook: No way in, no way out."
"Financial District: How come everything closes at seven?"
"Bed Stuy: Just planted trees on my block!"
"Inwood: You are still in Manhattan. Really."

And an honorary-borough-check or two:
"Hoboken: Why is the cab so expensive?"
