Special Style: A.P.C. Opens A New West Village Store

FEBRUARY 11, 2011

French geek-chic style mecca A.P.C. has launched a second store with a few new ideas and the same je ne sais quois.

The label has always thrived on collaboration and the incorporation of art, music and cultural objets, making it a perpetual font of cool. Founder Jean Touitou’s eclectic perfectionism encompasses classic denim and brainy ingenue styles for boys and girls rather than this year’s hot trends or runway interpretations.

So how does A.P.C. Specials—the label’s tiny new Bleecker & Perry outpost in the heart of the West Village—differ from the nearby Mercer store? In keeping with its reputation for collaboration, classics and cool concepts, A.P.C. Specials offers A.P.C. Vintage (the best pieces from past seasons) and Butler Jeans, a recycling program of sorts for A.P.C. denim devotees who don’t go for the distressed look as well as those who do. When your favorite pair gets a bit too worn, turn them in for another pair at cost. They’ll be washed, marked with your initials (!) and released into the loving custody of customers who actually prefer their jeans on the broken-in side. According to Touitou, the Butler Jeans name refers to 19th century butlers who would pre-wear aristocrats’ things so they wouldn’t look new and gaudy (via NYTimes). A.P.C. Specials will also feature collaborations with friends and favorites (like House of Waris jewelry) with more small-space-friendly coolness to come. Photos and more from Refinery 29.
