Summer Film Series: Outdoor Screenings

JULY 9, 2010

Midsummer nights mean free outdoor films in some of the city’s most beautiful screening spots.

The traditional under-the-stars movie night for New Yorkers has always been the Bryant Park film series, and this summer is no exception, with plans to screen the best classic flicks from James Bond to Monty Python. Bring your midsummer chill-out gear to Rumsey Playfield in Central Park for classics through August, ending with a viewer’s choice night.

River Flicks at Pier 54
screens films for grown-ups on Wednesdays; Fridays are for the kids. Rooftop Films—the young upstart of the outdoor cinema club—screens thought-provoking docs, features and shorts on rooftops and cool spaces throughout the city.

Brooklyn Bridge Park offers Movies with a View for the 11th season in a row at Empire Fulton State Park, adding short films and music by local DJs. Red Hook Films is another new option on the summer cinema circuit, making waves with free waterfront screenings of, appropriately, Jaws, Splash, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and more.

And the L Magazine Summerscreen series turns five this year, taking it outside through July and August with unforgettable films you may have forgotten, like Dead Man and Say Anything. You’ll find a list of free outdoor films happening in the city’s parks here.
