Taxi TV Stars: Local Shows Become Hits When They Hit the Road

OCTOBER 25, 2011

Local TV picks up where Sesame Street left off, with street smarts and homegrown talent geting a boost from tiny, unavoidable public screens.

Taxi TV may seem like yet another distraction in a nonstop media blitz, but its captive-audience angle has made it one of the more successful ways of reaching an audience, making it a perfect platform for a handful of high-quality locally-focused programs.

Talk Stoop with Cat Greenleaf may be the front-runner among Taxi TV success stories. Perky host Greenleaf has interviewed a galaxy of celebrities from Claire Danes to Kim Kardashian from her own stoop in brownstone Brooklyn for nearly three years. The show’s intimate, friendly tone has made an appearance on the Stoop a must-do on celebrity publicists’ lists. Another hit for the Dramamine-screen has been LXTV’s First Look, which showcases the latest and greatest in local restaurants, shopping, fashion and nightlife. The NBC-owned network has tapped into the fascination New Yorkers have with their non-stop city and made great use of the quick-hit opportunity.

A few more talk-format shows like Moms & the City and a Dad Named David (modern parenting tips), and The Debrief with David Ushery (a recap of breaking news and culture stories) have also gained a following because of their debut on Taxi TV. But entertaining, informative quick-hit local programming doesn’t stop with the taxi meter. Thread NY, (inside news on New York fashion), Talk Stoop, Moms, and others—like Lunch NYC (guest hosts cover topics like urban farming)—can be seen on NBC New York Nonstop online and on local TV channels.
