Tea Time: Gramstand Makes Room for a Cup and Conversation

SEPTEMBER 26, 2008

Tea fanatics and mobile entrepreneurs get a home away from home

Tucked into an unassuming storefront on Avenue A, a small, relatively new refuge encourages tea lovers to linger over a cup and an afternoon. Gramstand is a bit different: Coffee isn't the number one focus here.

The establishment's name comes from Gramstand's origin as "a small stand in Gramercy selling grams of tea to fanatics across the city." Tea is the real focus, with a seasonal menu of traditional and exotic teas, each handpicked by the shop's proprietor (a graduate of the Wild Lily Tearoom and the Tea Association). Signature drinks include pear hibiscus tea that changes color and flavor as you drink it, a Mocha Earl Grey with whipped cream and chocolate, and a Citrus Berry whose ice cubes, made of tea, melt to reveal honey inside. Coffee drinkers, you're welcome as well.

While the menu offers over 50 types of tea, care has clearly been taken to assure that the environment is comfortable as well. Gramstand is the rendez-vous of choice for the Coworking Meeetup, a group of entrepreneurially-minded individuals. Free Wi-Fi aplenty, makes a perfect away-from-home-office for the next wave of startup success stories.
