The Tiniest Homes in Town

APRIL 1, 2010

A few New Yorkers—and a few tiny apartments—deserve special recognition for small-footprint living.

Brokers did their best to spin this cupcake-sized co-op on 110th Street in Morningside Heights, and the—seemingly happy—couple living in the 175 square feet of co-op coziness (with their two cats) made headlines last year for the way they’d squeezed their not-too-small life into four walls they could almost touch at once.

Decor and design site Apartment Therapy holds an annual “Small Cool” contest inviting entrants to share the ways they’ve outfitted their diminutive digs. In the “Teeny Tiny Division” (homes under 300 square feet) Kevin Patterson showed plenty of ingenuity and an eye for scaled-down design with his 210 square-foot Upper West Side mini-pad. Taller but still model-thin, this West Village waif gets plenty of attention as New York City’s narrowest house, though at 9 feet, 6 inches wide, the teeny townhouse at 75 1/2 Bedford Street (via Curbed) was apparently enough for Cary Grant, John Barrymore, Margaret Mead and other big names who have at one time made it their home.
