Think Small: Apartment-Friendly Pets

SEPTEMBER 18, 2008

Apartment-Friendly Pets: Featured Creatures for City Living
If you like to be greeted by a wagging tail or a furry face, but you’ve got a busy life in the city, you may need to do some thinking before you pick your pet.

Dogs are classic companions. The best city breeds: Anything with “toy” or “miniature” in the name, of course. Other pint-sized pups include Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Pekingese, Pomeranians, Pugs (these get high marks from city folk, since they reportedly like to sleep a lot.), Shih Tzus, Schipperkes, and Cocker Spaniels. Cats are quiet and clean, and they don’t require walks or registration. Some creative folks have found ways to integrate playgrounds for their pets into their décor.

If you don’t have much time to devote to your four-legged friend, you may need to pay through the muzzle for someone else to do it. Pet care specialists will walk your dog or care for your pet in your home. At top-end buildings like 505 Greenwich, pampered pets even get their own spa.

If dogs and cats are too much commitment or forbidden in your building, there are plenty of that require less work but still provide warm fuzzies. These include, sugar gliders (tiny, huge-eyed marsupials), guinea pigs, reptiles (snakes and lizards), birds, ferrets (though cute, these guys can make quite a mess of your home), and fish.
