Thrift On: Beacon's Closet Opens in Manhattan

OCTOBER 14, 2011

Brooklyn’s favorite place for recycling cute clothes has arrived in Manhattan.

Beacon’s Closet has the recycling concept down: They’ll buy your gently loved, fashion-forward clothes, jewelry, accessories and shoes. But, unlike a consignment shop, you’ll walk away with cash or credit to use in the store’s vast wonderland of bargain-priced—but totally stylish—men’s and women’s stock. Beacon’s Brooklyn (Williamsburg and Park Slope) locations have long been a wardrobe treasure trove, whether you favor designer vintage, top-quality basics, or exactly what’s trendy right now at a fraction of even H & M prices. Constant turnover and a seemingly endless supply keeps things fresh.

Beacon’s Closet Manhattan, which just opened its doors at 10 West 13th Street next to Parsons main campus, consists of the shop’s trademark cavernous space finished in hip, industrial loft style and brimming with just-right jackets and coats, skinny and flared jeans, cardigans, cute tops, cool boots, preppy gear and just about everything else you’d see on the streets of the city’s trendier districts. House rules are few, but if you’re selling, they’re pretty picky about what they’ll buy, limiting yes-votes to blemish free items that are on-trend and in season. If you’re buying, remember: Finders, keepers; and if you put it down, someone else may pick it up.
