Two Wheelin': Free Bike Rentals

JUNE 19, 2009

Cyclists get a free ride in downtown Manhattan this summer.

If you've got the urge to get some exercise, enjoy the outdoors, stay out of the car and off the subway, hopping on a bike is the perfect idea. If you've got everything but the bike (or you've got a friend in town who wants to come along), Bike Around Downtown, (part of The Alliance for Downtown New York, and funded through a grant from State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver) is offering free bike rentals in downtown Manhattan all summer, 7 days a week. The same organization offers free bike rentals every Friday on car-free Governor's Island, as well. Just register online and pick up your bike at the South Street Seaport Bike and Roll booth.

You can find out more about the city's bike paths with NYC Cycling Maps from the DOT. While you're riding, be on the lookout for artist-of-all-trades David Byrne's cool bike racks–Byrne himself is a bicycle enthusiast—his nonfiction book, “Bicycle Diaries,” is scheduled for release later this year. For more bike rental information, check this comprehensive list to start the wheels turning.
