Updated: The AIA Guide to New York City

JUNE 10, 2010

An essential guide to the city’s architectural landscape gets a much-needed update.

In a city whose buildings define its history and culture, the AIA Guide to New York City has been the definitive guide to the structures at the city’s heart since its first publication in 1968. The newest (2010) edition is here, and it reflects one of the biggest growth periods in New York City’s architectural landscape in recent history. The guide had not seen an update since the fourth edition was released in 2000. The new edition is consistent with previous versions, contextualizing and illuminating with real affection and the ability to size up the city for what it is: a confluence of unfettered creative brilliance, and–occasionally misguided–ego. This consistency is due, in part, to the fact that its lead writer, Norval White, had been with the project since its first edition. Anyone who’s interested in New York and its past, present and future will find this guide to be an indispensable friend.

From June 2-16, the AIA New York Chapter is presenting an exhibition called “Ten in Ten” which will showcase their picks for the top ten new additions to the guide. They’ve chosen one from each of the last ten years to illustrate how much the city has changed. The exhibition will be held at the The Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place.
