Weekends Away: Short-Haul Getaways

These drivable getaways can put you on time-out in just a few hours and have you back in town on Monday morning.

If you're feeling flush, the casino resorts at mini-Sin-Cities Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in Connecticut offer plenty of encouragement in the form of meals, room perks, spa packages and more, and you don't even have to hit the casinos, though they're hoping you will. On a roll? The slick new Aces Train service shuttles fun-seekers straight to Atlantic City, New Jersey and back in style (and in less than three hours).

If you're looking for family fun, Mohonk Mountain House (90 miles north of the city in New Paltz, NY) offers postcard-perfect views and plenty for the kids to do. Rocking Horse Ranch in the Hudson Valley is another pick for laid-back lodgings, riding and other outdoor adventures.

For less structure, head west to the Delaware Water Gap in the Pocono Mountains for weekly arts and music festivals, golf, hiking and other outdoor refreshers, or do what generations of New Yorkers have done: Visit the Catskills for classic getaway spots like Kutsher's Country Club or the cozier Full Moon Resort in Big Indian.
