The city’s art establishment kicks into high gear as well, with gallery openings galore from Chelsea to the Lower East Side and elsewhere. Wednesday brings some great shows to the Lower East Side; Thursday is a big night in Chelsea, with more happening on the weekend. Check Artcards for what’s where, when.

9/11 A Decade Later: Lessons Learned and Future Challenges
On Thursday, September 8 at 92Y, Big guns Donald Rumsfeld, Ari Fleischer and others discuss what happened a decade ago, and what has happened since. Lit journal Granta also addresses the subject with Ten Years Later, a special issue dedicated to the decade following the attacks, with essays from award-winning authors; they’ll be discussing the issue at Book Court in Brooklyn on September 9.

Staten Island Yankees vs. Coney Island Cyclones
There may be no subway series this year but the Ferry Series gets into full swing this week with the Staten Island Yankees vs. the Brooklyn Cyclones slugging it out five-borough style in a best-of-three semifinal series. What will happen after the first game on Tuesday, September 6, is anybody’s guess (SILive).

Housing Works Teacher Appreciation Happy Hour
Teachers may be the unsung heroes of the season. In honor of their kids’ book sale and the end of the first week of school, on Friday, September 9 from 2-7pm, Housing Works Bookstore shows their appreciation with buckets of beer and bottles of wine, which will very likely be much appreciated in return.

Live Music Round Up
This week Patti Smith gives a free show at Webster Hall, Peter, Bjorn and John play for the young folks, old folks and everyone else at Brooklyn Bowl and TV on the Radio and Broken Social Scene pay the city a visit at the Williamsburg Waterfront.
