What's Going on This Week

APRIL 22, 2009

Two concerts by two of the biggest innovators in modern composition happen on the same night this week. Flip a coin!

Heads, it's Terry Riley at Carnegie Hall. The Godfather of minimalism leads this 45th anniversary performance of his legendary piece,"In C." Accompanying him are none-the-lesser luminaries Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass, Morton Subotnick, and Dan Zanes.
Friday, April 24, 8pm
Carnegie Hall (881 7th Ave)
Price: $21 - $72

Tails, then, would be celebrated guitar composer Rhys Chatham, who will lead a performance of his seminal 1977 composition "Guitar Trio," accompanied by a slide presentation by the artist Robert Longo entitled Pictures for Music (1979) as part of the Metropolitan Museum Concerts series.
Friday, April 24, 6pm
Metropolitan Museum, Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Avenue,
Price: $40

If free plus food is music to your ears, wait until Sunday and head uptown for the WBAR-B-Q. Barnard College radio station WBAR celebrates the 16th annual music fest on Lehman Lawn with an eclectic lineup including synth-pop waifs Xeno and Oaklander, Soft Circle and headlined by tribal/electronic rockers Gang Gang Dance. There will, of course, be BBQ, and plenty of lawn to share.
