What's Going on this Week: New Year's Eve Edition

DECEMBER 29, 2010

If you’re looking forward to a night on the town for New Year’s Eve, the options are many, and you’ll have plenty of company.

Dress to the nines, dine in style and dance above the city lights with old fashioned end-of-a-decade glamour: The Standard hotel—home of the socialite-magnet Boom Boom Room—is holding a black-tie-bash-slash-rooftop-celebration with special guest ’60s culture icon Marianne Faithfull. The Hudson hotel is also opening its hot-ticket bar for the night and into the morning. Though it won’t help you get a taxi, a new All Access Party Pass covers several popular downtown celebrations for a flat rate with plenty of perks.

If you’re more into the rock, house and loft party scenes, you’ve got plenty of options from special performances to no-holds-barred debauchery. National Book Award winner Patti Smith delivers her annual performance at Bowery Ballroom for new and die-hard fans. Music fans get a chance to catch wildly popular indie-psych star Ariel Pink at a Brooklyn performance space, classic funk with the Roots at Brooklyn Bowl, and/or Q-tip and Friends in the basement hideaway known as Liberty Hall at the Ace Hotel. Serious house music fans can dance in the new decade to the best in house at Let’s Play House at a secret Brooklyn location to be revealed on 12/30, and ultra creative types can let loose at Winkel and Balktick’s W&B Airlines party and the always-entertaining Rubulad happening (via Impose).

If you’d rather switch gears and start the year without a hangover, Jivamukti Yoga School’s annual New Year’s Eve event rings in the new year gently with a vegan dinner, a Kirtan dance party and—something really different—silence.
