What's Going on this Week

MAY 25, 2011

The city’s outdoor revelry begins in earnest for Memorial Day Weekend.

Brooklyn Flea: Now in Williamsburg (+Smorgasburg)
The Brooklyn Flea (NY Times) juggernaut jogs on with Sundays in the ‘burg as of this spring. You’ll find plenty of cool stuff for sale and a chance to check in with your crew. And just to make sure no one leaves hungry, your favorite food vendors now have their own locally-sourced, lovingly-prepared homespun food court, christened Smorgasburg. The Williamsburg Flea happens Sundays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. rain or shine at 27 North 6th Street between Kent Avenue and the East River. The Fort Greene Flea happens every Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m..

Mister Sunday: Opening Day in Gowanus Grove
Spend your don’t-have-to-get-up-tomorrow Sunday afternoon relaxing in one of the city’s chillest under-the-radar outdoor party spots. The little slice of paradise in the middle of industrial Brooklyn that hosted the treasured Brooklyn Yard Sundays of years past is back in action with DJs, food, drink and cultural events. This Sunday’s kickoff party includes special guest Four Tet.
Sunday May 29, 3-9 p.m.
Gowanus Grove, 400 Carroll Street (between Bond & Nevins)
Tickets: $12 ($10 with RSVP); Kids under 18 free.

Fleet Week
If you love a man or woman in uniform this is your week. Salute the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during this annual week of military festivities, including a military aircraft fly over in honor of those who lost their lives in service and the Memorial Day ceremony on the flight deck of the Intrepid with an unfurling of the 100-foot-long American Flag.
Check the Fleet Week event schedule for more details.

Secret Comedy: Modern Weepers (Fred Armisen, Mike Myers) at Mercury Lounge
For those not in-the-know: The Modern Weepers are, in fact, the modern comedians Fred Armisen (SNL, Portlandia) and Mike Myers (SNL, Wayne’s World). No word yet who the third “band member” is. So now you know; finding a ticket is up to you.
Friday, May 27, 8:30 p.m.
Mercury Lounge, 217 East Houston Street
Tickets: $10

Live Music Round-Up
Concerts of note this week include a free Lady Gaga show in Central Park, the well-curated off-color swagger of Peaches (DJ & MC set) at Webster Hall, the sludgy, arty, melodic noise of Times New Viking at the Knitting Factory and a stellar line-up at Dylan Fest at Bowery Ballroom to commemorate the rock icon’s 70th.
