What's Going on this Week

DECEMBER 23, 2009

If the Holidays mean movies with family and friends, skip the standard fare for some off-beat cinema—showing this week at theaters around town—to get you ready for a new decade of entertainment.

Sci-Fi-junkies and special effects geeks will appreciate the wow factor of Avatar (especially in IMAX 3D). Werner Herzog’s Hurricane Katrina crime drama Bad Lieutenant promises to thrill. An adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s adventure tale The Road twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat. For a sweeter viewing experience, Ricky may be French director Francois Ozon’s most overtly emotional offering, and A Town Called Panic is–literally–a toy story with a new perspective on some age-old themes.

If quirky classics are more your speed, settle in with the Little Tramp at Lincoln Center Walter Reade Theater where they’re screening City Lights and Modern Times, or get your screwball comedy fix and forget your cares with the antics of Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in His Girl Friday at BAM.
