Work Out of the Box: The Best Non-Traditional Work Spaces

JANUARY 11, 2011

The city boasts more than enough non-traditional work spaces to keep you in business.

They’re neither home nor office and they continue to pop up all over the city: A recent Time Out NY article listed some of the city’s better office and coworking spaces since the idea took hold several years ago. Among them were Jelly!, In Good Company (geared toward women entrepreneurs) and Micro Office in Manhattan, and The Change You Want to See Gallery and Ditmas Work Space in Brooklyn. Adding even more good ideas to the equation, Green Desk offers an environmentally conscious—as well as cozy and idea-friendly—work space.

If you’d rather sip a latte with your business plan, novel or screenplay—this NY Times article points out that you might have to fight for a seat at any of these wifi cafes (also courtesy of TONY), but they’ve been tested and approved by the city’s laptop armies. Top contenders include Argo Tea, Soy Cafe, Ost Cafe, B Cup, Moomah (set up especially for parents with little ones) and the lobby of the Ace Hotel in Manhattan and Atlas and Second Stop in Williamsburg. Some of the spots listed are in outer boroughs, in neighborhoods like Ditmas Park and Crown Heights, and some, like An Beal Bocht Cafe in Riverdale and Long Island City’s Communitea, are finding their way into neighborhoods.
