The Capitol is a 39 story Chelsea rental whose rounded corners were designed by Costas Kondylis to recall the nearby Flatiron Building. Completed in 2001 with 387 apartments, the burnt orange and red brick tower was developed by the Witkoff Group and the Adell Corporation.
The building replaced the Coogan Building, an 1870s structure originally designed by Alfred H. Thorp for the Racquet Court Club and later used as loft space. Its development followed the 1995 residential rezoning of this stretch of the former Flower District. A 50 foot wide mid-block plaza occupies the east side of the property.
Apartments tend toward broad, open plans shaped by the tower’s curved massing. Bay windows are prevalent, while some corner layouts have pie shaped living rooms; kitchens often use U shaped plans or islands. Many renovated homes have high ceilings, wood floors and open kitchens, and larger apartments have in-unit washers and dryers.
The full service staff includes a 24 hour doorman, concierge, valet services and a live-in superintendent. The Capitol also has a fitness center, resident lounges and work areas, a garden, laundry facilities, garage parking and a rooftop terrace. Pets are permitted.
