The Chrystie,
229 Chrystie Street

229 Chrystie Street Location Map

Overview of The Chrystie at 229 Chrystie Street

The Chrystie is a 14 story, 361 unit rental at 229 Chrystie Street in the Lower East Side, completed in 2005. Developed by AvalonBay Communities and designed by Arquitectonica with SLCE, it was the first of four buildings constructed on the long contested Cooper Square Urban Renewal site and was formerly known as Avalon Chrystie Place.

The building combines an eight story wing and a 14 story tower above a two story, light stone base, with red brick upper elevations and metal framed corner windows. The development was built over a subway tunnel and incorporated a three level community center. Its plan also preserved the Liz Christy Bowery Houston Garden, with the buildings positioned to limit shadows on the garden.

Layouts range from studios to two bedrooms, and both compact and larger plans use open or pass through kitchens. Many apartments have nine foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, in-unit washers and dryers, and broad city exposures; the building also has terraces and balconies.

The Chrystie has a 24 hour doorman, concierge, fitness center, swimming pool, resident lounge with billiards, event space, resident and bike storage, a full service garage, and a rooftop terrace with grills. The building is pet friendly, with Whole Foods at its base. It sits near the meeting point of the Lower East Side, East Village, NoLita, and SoHo, and the F train stops at Second Avenue, with an entrance at East Houston and Chrystie Streets.
