Jon Epstein of Cushman & Wakefield Inc., told CityRealty.com today that the plans for the redevelopment of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany at 1393 York Avenue on the northwest corner at 74th Street, written about yesterday, call for the demolition of the existing church structure, which was designed by Wyeth & King and opened in 1939.

Mr. Epstein is marketing the site for the church and said that he has received "very strong interest" from developers who have until November 2, 2005 to submit bids. He said that a zoning study done for the church indicated that a 21-story, mixed-use building containing about 20,000-square feet of church facilities and about 115,000 square feet of residential condominiums could be built on the site.

The red-brick church is two blocks north of Sotheby's, the auction house, and is close to many high-rise "luxury" apartment towers.

"The distinctive squat spire is a Scandinavian romance for Manhattan's avenuescapes. What a great silhouette!" enthused Elliot Willensky and Norval White about the existing building in their fine book, "The A.I.A. Guide to New York City, Fourth Edition" (Three Rivers Press, 2000).
