Between the United Nations General Assembly and the pageantry surrounding the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, another event might have gotten lost in the shuffle: Climate Week NYC 2022, which is held in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly and the City of New York. The official events bring together government officials, business leaders, and climate experts aimed at exactly that. The event takes place one year after the devastation of Hurricane Ida, and at a time when Hurricane Fiona has knocked out power all over Puerto Rico.
This year's theme is "Getting It Done," but New York has been working on that over the past year. In light of Hurricane Ida, City Comptroller Brad Lander has proposed a framework modeled on the Loft Law for legalizing basement apartments and making them safer. A number of clean energy projects are in the works, including the transformation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into an offshore wind port facility. Additionally, buildings all over the city measuring 25,000 square feet or larger are literally cleaning up their acts in preparation for Local Law 97, which requires them to meet new energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission limits by 2024 or face steep fines. A letter grade system calls attention to big buildings' energy efficiency in what it hopes will be a call to action to make them more sustainable.

Nevertheless, for more than a decade, several developers and their designers embarked on a quest for LEED certification. Checklist items to reach one of four certification levels include proximity to public transportation, responsibly sourced materials, and finishes, planted green roofs, and rainwater collection for garden irrigation systems. Credits are also given for specifying high-efficiency appliances, advanced-performance windows, reinforced insulation, and advanced water-conserving plumbing fixtures.
