Developer GFI Hospitality's properties have a history of taking their neighborhoods by storm, and it is now bringing its magic to a former parking lot in Boerum Hill with a “lifestyle hotel” under construction. The project got off to a highly inauspicious start when broken machinery hit and killed a construction worker in October 2016. However, a recent visit showed that construction is underway and rising above the scaffold.

Renderings released by Broadway Construction Group show a mid-rise building with multipane windows and a custom art installation to break up its expanse along Schermerhorn Street. Hospitality experts Stonehill & Taylor have been tapped for the hotel’s architecture, and Roman and Williams will handle the interiors. Plans show a garden, terrace, lounge, restaurant, meeting rooms, and on-site parking. Suites will begin on the third floor, and floors 5-29 will have 29 rooms each.

Given the developer's history, it is no surprise that the hotel was rumored to be a Brooklyn Ace Hotel. The original Ace Hotel has been described as “a neighborhood starter kit” and credited with the rise of NoMad as a place to live, work, and play. The NoMad Hotel and The Beekman have breathed new life into forgotten buildings. On the West Coast, the Ace Hotel and Swim Club transformed a former Howard Johnson into a premier Palm Springs destination.
