Earlier this month, building permits were filed to bring a 42,000-square-foot, 120-key hotel to the corner of Grand and Flushing avenues across from the Brooklyn Navy Yard's old hospital grounds. The plans were filed by Professor Hans Georg Näder, the president and CEO of the Otto Bock Group whose mission is to restore and preserve mobility for people with disabilities. City records show Näder paid $4.6 million in 2014 for the large site wedged between the BQE and the Navy Yard.
While filings show Stephen B. Jacobs Group as the architects of record, the German-based designers at GNÄDINGER Architekten have posted details and renderings of a captivating new tower featuring a long podium topped by a green roof. Several terraces would be interspersed throughout the design, likely to take advantage of the unobstructed views towards the East River and Manhattan skyline.
It is unknown if GNÄDINGER's design is in play. Published images show a tower of roughly 13 floors tall, while permits prescribe a five-story building. The on-file floor schedule shows there would be retail and an eating/drinking establishment on the cellar and first floors, a 51-car parking garage, and 30 hotel rooms apiece on floors two through five.
