A new 161-key hotel is squeezing its way onto the clamoring blocks of Midtown East. The Hilton Grand Vacation is a ground-up 32-story hotel development taking shape at 12 East 48th Street between Fifth and Madison avenues. According to the building’s designers, Handel Architects, the concrete frame will be clad in a folded aluminum rain screen, designed to play with the light and shadow. The full-height windows expand in width as the tower rises, “giving a sense of motion to the tower,” says the in-demand firm.

Inside the building will be timeshare hotel units managed by Hilton, ground-floor retail, and an accessory courtyard and deck. Due to the narrowness of the site, there will be just five to seven rooms per floor.
Midtown-based Hidrock, led by CEO Abraham Hidary, recently finished construction on the Embassy Suites by Hilton at 60 East 37th Street and on a Courtyard by Marriott near the World Trade Center. According to the Real Deal, Hidrock snapped up this site in 2014 for $47 million. The project is steps away from Fifth Avenue shopping and Rockefeller Center, and close to the Theater District and Grand Central Terminal.
