In a bustling city, meditation rooms can provide an escape. (Saint Marks Place via Grain London) In a bustling city, meditation rooms can provide an escape. (Saint Marks Place via Grain London)
On the tenth day of the tenth month, the World Health Organization recognizes World Mental Health Day to discuss mental health issues around the world and to mobilize undertakings to make mental health care accessible to all. This is a multifaceted endeavor that requires effort from all sectors – government officials and healthcare professionals among them – but there are small steps individuals can take to improve their own mental well-being. Among them is meditation, which numerous studies have shown can reduce negative emotions, increase patience and creativity, and lead to better stress management.
As meditation has evolved from a niche New Age-style activity to a mainstream practice, a number of meditation studios have opened in New York. Additionally, smart residential developers have begun to incorporate these into their amenity packages. Gramercy Square led the charge with a studio co-designed by MNDFL, and a crop of new developments has added meditation rooms and terraces to their health and wellness amenity packages. These are not white boxes, but spaces intentionally designed with a tranquil atmosphere to help residents in their practice. We take a look at new developments with meditation space among the amenities package in this time of increased stress and uncertainty.
