On visits to streets that fall within the Soho Cast Iron Historic District, New Yorkers and tourists can’t help but be struck by the marriage of turn-of-the-century architecture and contemporary fashions sold within. In the latest example, DXA Studios Architecture will present its plans for an expansion at 53 Mercer Street, a former artist’s studio between Broome and Grand Streets, to the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday, October 23. If approved, the planned retail and office building, presumably headquarters for new fashion tenant Dolce Vita, will be expanded to 61 feet and five stories high.
According to a presentation submitted on behalf of owner Oren Evenhar, who is doing business under the entity Mercer Sunshine LLC, Landmarks has previously approved the creation of a new storefront and the removal of fire escapes on the site. The enlarged building won’t dramatically alter the streetscape, but the addition’s proposed aluminum façade and significantly larger windows could prove too jarring a contrast between old and new for some.
