Zelig Weiss, the visionary behind Williamsburg’s newly-minted lWilliam Vale Hote is moving ahead with at least two big hotel ventures in Brooklyn. Earlier this year, we showed you renderings of a forthcoming 140-key hotel planned for 27 Stewart Street in Bushwick designed by Zelig’s go-to design firm Albo Liberis. Now, the developer-architect collabo is working on another unconventional hotel, this time in Greenpoint, just north of McCarren Park.
The 7,500-square-foot project site sits along a typical Greenpoint block lined with a mix of vinyl-sided rowhomes and low-slung warehouse buildings. The site holds a two-story commercial building that was cleared for demolition in March. Redevelopment plans first surfaced in May 2015 when permits for a new 5-story, 70-room hotel building were filed by Joel Goldman’s 65-73 Eckford LLC. After sitting fallow for some time, the site was sold last year to Zelig Weiss’ Riverside Developers for $9.8 million. Now with the renewed building application approved, construction may be imminent.

A rendering published on Albo Liberis’ website titled Eckford Hotel matches the project’s location and recently approved zoning diagrams. Distinguishing design elements include a secondary exterior wall that sits nearly 15 feet in front of the building’s primary façade. Constructed of red brick with arched openings, the front resembles a salvaged section of a Roman aqueduct and is an innovative way of maintaining the streetwall. Inside are six levels of hotel rooms with amenities that will include two outdoor spaces and a gym. A pair of exterior stair towers bookend the arresting design.
