For some New Yorkers, the thrill of living in the big city wears off with the desire to have a yard and more space in general. But rather than surrender to the suburbs, they would be advised to look into a new class of maisonette apartments. Taken from the French term for "little house," these homes, found on the lower levels of their buildings, enjoy private outdoor space and more square footage than their neighbors above. And in certain new condos, residents can truly have everything by being allowed access to an impressive suite of amenities.

However, this type of apartment isn't for everyone. Even in the most carefully constructed new building, ground-floor units have less light and more traffic noise by default. Some people might like having their own outdoor space, but resent having everyone else in the building walk by their front door. And if you want to look out the window and see the iconic New York skyline, you've picked the wrong listing.

That being said, maisonettes have proven to be in high demand. It wasn't easy to find ten examples of this apartment type, but we've uncovered a few in highly coveted New York neighborhoods.
