When New York was on lockdown in the early days of the pandemic, some wondered if whole families living, working, studying, and relaxing in one small apartment would lead to an exodus from the center of the city. However, while a single-family townhouse ranked among the top contracts of the past week, it was not the highest priced. That honor went to the townhouse unit at 95 Charles Street, which offers the privacy of a townhouse along with the services of a boutique condominium. It was asking $13,995,000, and Olshan Realty's market report notes that the unidentified seller paid $8,500,000 for it in 2008.
The second-highest contract was for #4/5A at 895 Park Avenue, which entered contract with a $12,000,000 ask. The listing notes that it has been owned and maintained by the same family for nearly 60 years. The buyer and seller were not identified, but the prewar Park Avenue building has counted conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein, art collector/philanthropist Carol Feinberg, and investment banker/New Jersey Devils owner Joshua Harris among its past notable residents.
