Patio of 43 Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights (Sotheby's) Patio of 43 Garden Place in Brooklyn Heights (Sotheby's)
In a fortunate piece of timing, temperatures in New York are expected to rise starting on Saturday, March 20, which is officially the first day of spring. However, that is not to say that that is the deadline for buyers to find a city apartment with a private balcony, terrace, garden, or even backyard. Prices remain down from their historic highs, and several developers and designers are incorporating outdoor space into their buildings.

Moreover, while the coronavirus vaccine promises a return to previous times, many of us have taken the past year to think about which aspects of “normal” we wish to embrace and reject. For some, office life falls into the latter: A recent study by the Partnership for New York City found that only 10% of New York City employees have returned to the office since last March, and that 66% of employers surveyed reported plans for a hybrid model that allows some days in the office and some days of working from home. In such an environment, those who choose to keep working from home would welcome private outdoor space as a place to take a break or even an alternate workspace on nice days.
