On Sunday, February 12, the Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. There was some controversy when the Empire State Building was lit up in the colors of the teams that would be going to the Super Bowl, neither of which are from New York, but there is nevertheless a city connection: Rihanna, whose halftime show is more anticipated than the game itself for some, once rented a Nolita penthouse for $39,000/month. As we take a look back at Super Bowl halftime performers of the past 10 years, we notice a number of them with city apartments, some in the same building.

Beyonce was the headliner of the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans, where the Baltimore Ravens narrowly defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Her husband Jay-Z was floated as a possible collaborator, but he decided not to do it. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, her Destiny's Child bandmates, did make special guest appearances, though.

195 Hudson Street was the headquarters of the U.S. Rubber Company before it was converted to condos, but we suspect it is now more famous for another reason: Beyonce and Jay-Z were married in the penthouse in a small, private ceremony 2008! The couple also kept a high-floor apartment at One Beacon Court as a pied-a-terre for family members, but sold it for $9.95 million less than two weeks after quietly listing it. (Fun fact: Beyonce’s mother, fashion designer Tina Knowles, also once owned a unit of her own at One Beacon Court.)

195 Hudson Street has 1 available listing for $6,498,000.

2014 - Bruno Mars

The Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos. Bruno Mars was the show's headliner, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers made a special guest appearance.
“I got a condo in Manhattan/Baby girl, what’s happening”...It appears the opening lyrics of “That’s What I Like” were not inspired by real life - Bruno Mars does not have any New York real estate, past or present! (Not even “Somewhere in Brooklyn.”)

2015 - Katy Perry

Katy Perry was the headline act of the halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ, where the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks. The performance featured special appearances by Lenny Kravitz (see below) and Missy Elliot, but the "Left Shark" would turn out to steal the show.

In 2012, Katy Perry and then-husband Russell Brand bought a sunny duplex penthouse for $2.68 million at 65 North Moore Street. Following their split, she sold it at a loss for $2.62 million in 2012. Unlike early hit “California Gurls,” she has not (yet) commemorated her time in New York in song.

Between the sound lounge at The Kent and the interiors of 75 Kenmare Street, singer Lenny Kravitz has spent the past few years making his mark on New York's luxury real estate. Perhaps he honed his skills in his Soho penthouse at 30 Crosby Street - as the singer tried to sell the apartment, he renovated it. After it sold for $12.375 million, the buyers were revealed as Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz. (It has since changed hands again.)

During Super Bowl 50, when the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, British rock group Coldplay headlined the halftime show. Beyonce and Bruno Mars, who had been headliners in previous years (see above), made special guest appearances.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has recently moved into a Malibu mansion with partner Dakota Johnson, but the singer has a history in Tribeca: In 2005, he and then-wife Gwyneth Paltrow purchased a loft in 13 Harrison Street, a liquor and candy manufacturing building turned luxury condominium, for $7.95 million. The couple would later sell it for $13.65 million upon relocating to England, but purchased a pied-a-terre penthouse at River Lofts for $5.1 million in 2007.

2017 - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga was the sole headliner at the halftime show of Super Bowl LI in Houston, TX, where the New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons. The performance featured a medley of her hit songs, including selections from her album Joanne, and began on the roof of venue NRG Stadium.

Gaga: Five Foot Two goes behind the scenes of the events leading up to this performance, and parts of the documentary were set in a Central Park penthouse. It is now back on the market for $40,000/month.

Lady Gaga would later live in in a Chelsea mansion masterfully renovated with a two-car garage, home theater, climate-controlled wine room, cellar-level pool, and roof deck with sweeping views. When the townhouse went on the market at the end of 2019, Robb Report noted that she was the only person to have stayed in it. Quite a long way from her early days as an artist on the Lower East Side!

2018 - Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake was the featured performer at the Super Bowl LII halftime show at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN, where the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots. It was his third appearance at Super Bowl halftime show, and the first following his 2004 performance with Janet Jackson.

The performance took place months after Mr. Timberlake and wife Jessica Biel closed on a penthouse at celebrity favorite 443 Greenwich Street at what would turn out to be a discounted price of $20.2 million. They have since departed and made a profit on the $29 million sale. This was the couple's more successful foray into New York real estate: It would take months and several price cuts before they could say "bye bye bye" to their penthouse in Soho Mews, which eventually sold at a loss for $6.35 million.

Maroon 5 was the headliner of the halftime show of Super Bowl LII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA, where the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams. The show featured special appearances by Big Boi and Travis Scott, the latter of whom agreed to participate on the condition that the NFL make a donation to a charity supporting social justice.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and his family live in a Los Angeles mansion now, but he and his wife, model Behati Prinsloo, spent their early days as a couple in a stylish Soho one-bedroom rich in loft-like details. Like many New Yorkers, they put the apartment on the market as part of a move to accommodate their first child in April 2016. Less than three months later, it sold at the asking price of $5.5 million. More recently, it returned to the market in October 2022.

The Super Bowl LIV halftime show took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were co-headliners, and the show featured guest appearances by Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Lopez's daughter Emme Muniz.
Shortly before Ms. Lopez expressed interest in performing at the Super Bowl, she and then-fiance Alex Rodriguez sold their three-bedroom apartment at 432 Park Avenue for $15.75 million after living there for less than a year. Rumors about the building's design flaws had nothing to do with their departure; when the apartment listed, a source told the New York Post that the power couple needed more space for when all their children from previous marriages were together. The singer is also selling a duplex penthouse at The Whitman Mansion in NoMad, but it is not currently on the market.

Super Bowl LV took place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. This was among the least-attended Super Bowls in history, owing to the pandemic, but viewers at home watched the game and the halftime show headlined by The Weeknd.

The show came several months after The Weeknd renewed the lease on a triplex penthouse at celebrity favorite 443 Greenwich Street. He and then-girlfriend Bella Hadid had previously rented the apartment in the "paparazzi-proof" building for $60,000/month in 2018.

Super Bowl LVI was played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where the Los Angeles Rams narrowly defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in their home stadium. The halftime show was led by Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar (pictured above in halftime show trailer) in what has been described by some as a “legends of hip hop” performance. As if that weren’t enough, 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak made surprise appearances as well.

But throughout this expansive lineup, only one headliner had the briefest connection to New York City: Mary J. Blige was born in the Bronx and briefly rented an apartment at The Ashley, an early entrant in the Far West Side's luxury residential renaissance.
The Ashley has 8 available listings from $3,545/month.

In 2013, when Unapologetic and “We Found Love” were still going strong, and Savage X Fenty, Fenty Beauty, and Fenty Skin were but twinkles in Rihanna’s eye, she rented a duplex penthouse at the nexus of Nolita and Soho. It has been on and off the sales market since 2017, when it was listed for $16,950,000, and is back on again at a reduced price.
129 Lafayette Street has 1 available listing for $12,950,000.
