During the Trump administration, a number of New Yorkers sought to express their displeasure with the former president's unpopular policies by hitting the developer where it would hurt the most: his branded real estate portfolio. Protesters regularly gathered, not to mention confronted Secret Service agents, in front of Trump Tower; condo boards petitioned to remove the Trump name from their buildings; and a 2018 CityRealty report found that prices in Trump-branded condos dipped well below the prices of other Manhattan luxury condos. It must be noted that a new class of supertalls with more modern finishes, appliances, and amenities literally cast these buildings in shadow, but the controversies cannot possibly have helped.
In the months following Biden's inauguration, some of the greatest fury has died down, and CityRealty's Trump Index shows that prices in buildings that still bear the Trump name are starting to tick back up, though nowhere near the level of previous highs. However, in the wake of the indictment of the former president, some sellers have been cautioned that they would be best advised to offload their properties before they lose any further value. Three units at One Central Park West, as the residential component of Trump International has been rebranded, were among New York's 220 sales listings that experienced price reductions from April 5-11, 2023.
