About 100 years after Joseph Pilates opened his first studio in New York City, the low-impact, core-centered workout he invented (and originally dubbed "contrology") is having a moment. Pilates classes have been the most booked globally for three consecutive years on ClassPass, with reservations up 66% year-over-year, and many celebrities attribute their lean physiques to Pilates.
In the early days of Pilates, ballet dancers' embrace of the exercises lent it an air of respectability among upper classes. More recently, a new class of influencer has adopted the term "Pilates girl" as shorthand for a traditionally beautiful woman who works hard to maintain a slender figure without building bulky muscles. However, the joke may be on these guys — as some men have discovered firsthand, Pilates isn't as easy as it looks.
In this article:
Traditional Pilates exercises can be done on mats, but reformer machines take the workouts to the next level. These spring-loaded carriage machines add adjustable resistance and provide shoulder rests, as well as straps and handles for the hands and feet. Healthline notes that reformers allow for customized intensity, a broader range of movements, and reduced pressure on joints.
Between the high cost and bulk, it is not feasible or practical for most New Yorkers to have reformers in their apartments. But a growing number of developers are including dedicated Pilates rooms in their amenity packages, alongside the fitness centers with dedicated studios with space for yoga, mat-based Pilates, and dance workouts. We look at new development condos with Pilates rooms featuring reformers among their wellness offerings.
