New Renderings of SCDA's Switchback Skyscaper Poised to Rise in Midtown East

Just east of Park Avenue at 118 East 59th Street, Euro Properties is moving ahead with their first foray into the Manhattan real estate market. According to recent construction photos, the foundation pit has mostly been dug and awaits its concrete foundation mat and walls. For now, the condominium project appears temporarily stalled likely awaiting financing. Ultimately, the "pencil-thin" tower will rise 500 feet high from its 5,000 square foot site tightly hemmed-in on three sides by office buildings. Condominium prices in the area are among the highest in the city and several of the city's tallest and most prestigious residential buildings: One Beacon Court, 432 Park Avenue, and 515 Park Avenue, are nearby.

The 38-story building will house just 29 grand condominiums ranging from one- to three-bedroom units. Each will occupy at least one full floor. Two units will be duplexes and at its apex will be a triplex penthouse. SCDA Architects are the designers and also crafted the under construction condos of Soori High Line and 515 West 29th Street in West Chelsea. The Soo Khian Chan-led firm is based out of Singapore and their designs are unapologetically modern, heightened by touches of whimsy and futurism. Here at 118 East 59th Street, multi-story frames are angled in an alternating pattern that The New York Times compares to the pressed down buttons of a an old-fashioned tap recorder. SCDA's project description explains:
"Glass of different textures and reflectivity will cover each alternating block to break up the potential monotony of a single curtain wall. The visual effect is one of a ribbon, laced between each of the tower’s stacked blocks, directing the pedestrian gaze up toward the sky."
