As inventory rises (to over 20,000 listings throughout New York City) and demand falls, it has shown in New York City rents. A report in August showed that rents fell 8% throughout New York City, with high-priced areas like Gramercy Park, the Upper East Side, and Brooklyn Heights among the hardest hit.

Even celebrity owners have been forced to adjust to this new environment. As the New York Post reported, Grammy-nominated singer Vanessa Carlton recently reduced the rent on the full-floor Soho loft she has owned since 2004 and rented out since 2014, when she began spending more time in Los Angeles. The apartment may be rented furnished, which includes the piano featured in the music video for "A Thousand Miles."
