In Queens, several units are listed for rent at Wavecrest Gardens, a waterfront residential complex in Far Rockaway. Located on Seagirt Boulevard, there are more than 1,600 units within ten six-story, redbrick buildings from Beach 20th Street to Beach 24th Street not far from the sandy shores of Rockaway Beach and the neighborhood's famous (and newly restored) five-mile boardwalk.

The complex is managed by Goldfarb Properties and available studios start at $1,099/month, one-bedrooms at $1,265/month and two-bedrooms at $1,465/month. Listings are no-fee and select units offer one month of free rent, or three months of free access to the on-site gym. Homes have hardwood floors, and kitchens are equipped with granite countertop and stainless steel appliances.

For those who have never ventured to the beachfront community, it's accessible via the A train and the Beach 25th / Wavecrest station is just a short walk from the complex. Parts of the Rockaway Peninsula suffered as a result of damage from Hurricane Sandy, but it has bounced back and is as vibrant as ever with an influx of mom-and-pop eateries, and an artistic movement inspired by the Rockaway surf culture.

Apartments at Wavecrest Gardens have other features too, like entrance foyers, large closets, breakfast bars and high-speed internet. All buildings at the complex have elevators and parking, and on-site amenities include a fitness center, a playground, laundry facilities, and secure storage space. Gas, heat and hot water are included.

The resilient community is known for its longtime residents, but in recent years the area has become more well-known to outsiders, which has attracted new development. East of the complex off Seagirt Boulevard at 162 Beach 5th Street, the developer-design team of JDS and CetraRuddy recently launched new beachfront homes at a project they call Saltmeadow, where two- and three-bedroom townhome rentals are priced from $2,650/month.

For things to do, the Rockaway Artists Alliances keeps the area busy with events and exhibitions, and the Inwood Country Club offers landscaped grounds, tennis and more. There are also plenty of ecological wonders in the immediate area that you simply cannot find in Manhattan or most other parts of the city.
